We have settled on a hybrid layout using CSS with simple tables. It gave nearly all the benefits, without the problems of a pure CSS layout.

Come back to the table!

It was an interesting experiment, and the way of the future, but although we were very pleased with the lean, clean code there were too many obscure bugs with different browsers to make it the solution we had hoped for. There was also an unexpected problem with variations in font and font size on some computers that caused the navigation bar to fall apart and obscure the titles below.

We have now changed to a transitional/hybrid layout, using simple tables combined with CSS style sheets. This is still lean coding, using a CSS and text-based navigation bar, but table cells control the un-expected effects in some browsers and fonts.

The age of easily created pure-CSS sites is approaching, but for now we think it is safer to stay with hybrid sites that validate to xhtml 1.0 transitional and clear away the complex heavy code of the "good old days".
